Chaumukha Darwaza

A magnificent gateway standing and fronting towards the Qutub Minar was once originally a part of the oldest fort Lal kot. Choumukhi (in Hindi) means four faces. A gateway with four faces through which kings and armies once troops. The crescent shaped structure with paved stones is an engraved grid pattern that specifies the reason that it was designed for defence. The purpose has not been detected. Due to its massive thickness and the architectural style of the gate, it was discovered to be of the tughlaq period. It has also been surmised that it could have been built by Thomas Metcalfe as one of his follies close to his original ‘Dilkusha’ mansion to increase the style of his retreat.
