Kashmiri Gate is walkable distance from Maharana Partap ISBT and Kashmiri Gate Metro Station. It is one of the original 14 gates built into the wall city of Delhi. It was built by the Britishers in 1835. There are two openings of the gate, one for entry and another for exit. During 1835, the British enlarged and straightened it into a two-way gate taking self-protective measure against enemy attacks. It is now preserved as monument on the road to the Vidhansabha metro station and the Delhi University. History:
It was also the historic venue of the intense fighting which took place in 1857, between the British army and the Indian freedom fighters. The gate was badly damaged by the British to get control over Delhi during the period of the war with freedom fighters. After the war Britishers developed this area as a commercial hub of Delhi, to cop up the daily needs of the residents of the Civil Lines which were developed by the Britishers. The name Civil Lines is a leftover of British Raj times, when the city of Delhi was organized into separate areas where the British military and civilian buildings were located. Areas, where civilians lived, were demarcated as Civil Lines and the Military area is marked as cantonment area. You may include this tourist attraction in your Delhi Tour Packages.
