History of Chawri Bazar:
Chawri is a Marathi word meaning ‘meeting place’. There was a tradition that before taking the quarrels in front of the Emperor, a meeting or ‘Sabha’ would take place in front of the noble’s house and he would try settling the quarrel. In the 19th century this bazaar was famous for its dancing girls. Before the British ‘tawaif’ culture was there but it got dwindle and prostitute got hold of the upper floor of the market. This eventually led the area becoming a center of criminality and thus Delhi Municipal Committee expel them from the area altogether. The atmosphere got completely changed when the British destroyed many huge mansion of the noble after 1857 war. You may include this tourist attraction in your Delhi Tour Packages.
