Dariba Kalan market in Chandni Chowk is one of Asia’s largest silver, gold and pearl markets. It is also known as the street of ‘Incomparable Pearl’. Two markets in Chandni Chowk which deal in ornaments such as silver, gold, stone are Dariba Kalan and Kinari Bazaar. Formerly ‘Kinari Bazaar was known as Dariba Khurd. Kalan means big and khurd means small in persian. One incident is attached to this place. In 1739 a Persian invader Nadir Shah ordered his soldiers to kill innocent citizens of Delhi and looted expensive and precious jewellery from the stores. Nowadays this market street is popularly known as ‘jewellery street’. The shopkeepers deals in large scale of silver, gold, pearls and stone ornaments. Moreover they deal in costume jewellery. It is a hub for wedding shopping for jewellery. Other essentials like chuda, kalire, bangles silver purses, latest and antiques, vintage jewellery are available. Further silver plates, dishes, cups, glasses, all kind of crockery in bulk is also available. You may find special ittar (perfume) is found in few shops. This market is closed on every Sunday.
