Magazine does not mean here a book of pages with articles. Magazine is a ammunition storage and feeding device for a repeating fire-arm,either integral with the gub or externally attached. British Magazine in Delhi was a place used by the British to store arms and ammunition. During the revolt of 1857 a large revolutionaries stepped into Delhi from meerut. They attacked the magazine. On the other hand the Britishers protected and barricaded the place. Indeed many of the army soldiers joined the rebels, only 9 british soldiers were left in the army. They held their position till 5 hrs and kept firing on the revolutionaries. One of the rebels reached the roof with the help of a ladder. It was decided to blow the magazine and themselves if the situation worsened. Assistant commissary John Buckley raised his hat and gave the signal to scully to lighten the gunpowder trail which lay inside the store which inturn burst the place into flames. The explosion was so powerful that it was heard in Meerut. Hundreds of civilians were killed. Five of the Britishers were killed, one was killed by revolutionaries. three successfully went to Meerut.
