There are a number of Hanuman Temples in Delhi. But, Pracheen/ Prachin Hanuman Mandir Connaught Place, Delhi is a special one. This temple is situated on Baba Kharak Singh Marg. Pracheen/ Prachin Hanuman Mandir Connaught Place, Delhi timings are not same for all days. Tuesday and Saturday are special days of worship when devotees come in large numbers at the temple.
Hanuman birthday is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm on the full moon day in the month of Chaitra (March – April) as per established lunar Hindu calendar. Colorful processions with devotees wearing Hanuman masks and tails and carrying large idols of Hanuman fill the streets.
Shops within the temple complex sell religious offerings and bangles made of lac and plastic. It is also a popular place for women for Mehndi (temporary henna tattoos).
It is believed that Tulsidas, who wrote Tulsi Ramayan and Hanuman Chalisa hymns in praise of Hanuman, visited this temple in Delhi. During his visit to Delhi, Mughal Emperor summoned Tulsidas and asked to perform a miracle. Tulsidas did the miracle with the blessings of Lord Hanuman. The Emperor pleased with Tulsidas and presented an Islamic crescent Moon finial which adorns the spire of Pracheen/ Prachin Hanuman Mandir as yet.
It is also alleged that due to the crescent moon symbol on the spire of Pracheen/ Prachin Hanuman Mandir, the temple was not destroyed by the Muslim rulers who invaded India at various times.
As per records, it was originally built by Maharaja Man Singh I of Amber during Emperor Akbar’s reign. It was reconstructed by Maharaja Jai Singh –II in 1724, dduring the construction of the Jantar Mantar of Delhi. After that the temple has undergone many improvements making it a notable religious center in the heart of Central Delhi.
This temple is well connected by road as well as Delhi Metro. Shivaji stadium is the nearest bus stand and also Shivaji Stadium Metro Station on Airport Express Metro Line as well as Rajeev Chowk Metro Station is the nearest metro station.
