The answer to this question is bit tricky. What, i want to say is that this area of Paharganj is a very old establishment. Lanes are narrow, shabby area all around. In addition to this petty crimes like snatching is bit common phenomena here. So, if you follow guidelines than Paharganj is a safe area even though for single women tourist also.

Do not practice this:

  • Avoid touts.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Avoid deserted lanes.
  • Cheap hotels are no no.
  • Avoid unnecessary discussions with locals.
  • Do not ask strangers for address, locations, etc.
  • Walking alone in lanes at night, is not a good idea.

Always Practice this:

  • Book good reputed hotel.
  • Best is to stay with company.
  • Check locks of the hotel room.
  • Remain always alert on the road.
  • Buy your food and drinks yourself.
  • Look for branded companies for travel arrangement.
  • Always carry your valuables in bag and wear that bag in front.

Paharganj is a safe area even though for single women tourist, but be alert. Kindly follow mentioned practices, to be on safe side. Further, this entire area is near to New Delhi Railway Station, so you may find big tourist groups here. Due, to this traffic may get stuck in-front of you. Its advisable to leave your hotel on time for sightseeing. Otherwise, it may be hat you may get stuck at Paharganj lanes unnecessary.
