History:

There is a very interesting history behind this place. It was totally different when it was discovered. In Hindi Khari or khara means ‘salty’ and Baoli means stepwell. In 1650 khari baoli was built by one of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan wife Fatehpuri Begum (Mosque is situated in Old Delhi by her name Fatehpuri Mosque). It was constructed to bathe the animals with saline or you can say salty water. Along the roadside there was there was a long walled gateway known as Lahori Gate which headed towards Lahore, now in Pakistan. But unfortunately no residue of that time is left today.
